Lucy Macharia

Dr Lucy Macharia is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Prince Cancer Group and a part-time tutor/demonstrator at the Department of Human Biology at the University of Cape Town. She obtained her PhD in Anatomical Pathology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she focused on glioblastoma research. She holds a master’s degree in medical microbiology from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Dr Macharia specializes in cell and molecular sciences with a dedicated focus on cancer research, particularly addressing the research gaps in African cancers. Her current work centres on cervical cancer, where she is working to identify new molecular targets and commercially available drugs that can be used to treat the poorest of women living with this disease. Dr. Macharia enjoys spending time in nature, supporting those in need, and taking care of plants.
